Many plants in the canopy of the tropics depend on the wind or gravity to disperse their seeds. "Wings" propel some seeds. Others, like the orchids, are so small their seeds scatter like dust.
Deeper in the forest, where there is little wind, plants rely on animals as seed-dispersers. Fruits and berries attract the animals by their fragrant scent or colorful appearance. When eaten, seeds are usually passed unharmed through the animals, fall on the forest ground and await germination.
